Tribute to Les Rafe

18th June 1999

Les Rafe passed away just after midnight on Saturday morning. Les is Heather Hill's father and Joyce's husband.

i am the life and the light and the way...
the earth is my garden.
each of the souls i plant as seeds
germinates and flowers in its season,
and in each i am fulfilled.
there is no cause for grief
when a blossom fades
but only rejoicing for the beauty it held
and praise that my will is done
and my plan served.
i am one with all creatures
and none is ever lost
but only restored to me
having never left me at all.
for what is eternal
cannot be separated from its source.
i am with you all
and each of you is a channel for my light.
feel my love
enfold you now and evermore.

Waking World

Here is a testimonial sent by Ken Hill on the man the Hill family loved and admired so much:

Les' long courageous battle with cancer has ended.

He can now rest in peace.

Les has been a great husband father and grandfather to our family.

He has taught us all to have the courage of our convictions.

Ever since I met him some 21 years ago I have admired his tenacity, and his willingness to take on battles for those who by themselves have not had the strength or knowledge to stand and fight.

All of us have gained through his example, particularly Heather.  (Image right Les with his wife Joyce)

I am sure what has kept him fighting his cancer for so long has been his desire to see his daughter enter parliament. His enthusiasm even at the toughest times was inspiring.

I am sure the proudest day of his life would have been seeing Heather take her position in the Senate, but regrettably he was cheated of that chance.

Les, rest easy, you have done a great job as a person and as an example of how to live proudly despite setbacks in life. We are all immensely proud of you.

Ken Hill
